Gordie Smith to be Inducted into the PGA of Canada Atlantic Hall of Fame

The PGA of Canada Atlantic is proud to announce the induction of Gordon (Gordie) Smith into its prestigious Hall of Fame. Gordie’s remarkable career as both a player and a dedicated contributor to the growth of golf has earned him this well-deserved honour.

We invite all members to join us for the 2024 Hall of Fame and Awards Gala Dinner, as we celebrate the induction of Gordie Smith into the Hall of Fame.

Player Accomplishments

It became clear from a young age that Smith would have a promising future in golf. With an impressive amateur career, winning 10 Nova Scotia Provincial Titles, including two Junior and three Amateur championships. His track record earned him a golf scholarship to the University of South Florida, setting the stage for an outstanding professional career.

As a professional, Gordie quickly made a name for himself. He was the 1986 Canadian Tour Rookie of the Year and went on to win the Ontario Open in both 1986 and 1987. His career highlights also include victories on the TPA Tour, a 7th place finish at the 1988 Canadian Open, and numerous PGA Atlantic titles, including the 1994 PGA Atlantic Championship and the 1994 Assistant’s Championship. Over the years, he added to his legacy with seven Senior PGA Atlantic Championships.

Club Professional Leadership

Gordie’s influence extended beyond the fairways. He began his career as an apprentice at Brightwood Golf Club in 1994, completing his Class A certification in 1995. As Head Golf Professional at Oakfield Golf Club from 1996 to 1998 and General Manager from 1999 to 2007, Gordie demonstrated his leadership in the club management arena. In 2008, he took on the role of General Manager at Ashburn Golf Club, where he continues to lead today. His work with golf course architect Ian Andrew on the renovation of Old Ashburn and hosting major events like the Nova Scotia Open (2015 and 2016) and the 2023 Canadian Women’s Amateur reflect his vision and dedication.

A Builder of the Game

Gordie’s contributions to golf extend far beyond playing and managing clubs. He has been a steadfast advocate for the growth of the game through his work with Golf Nova Scotia, development camps, and training seminars. He served on the PGA Atlantic Board from 1999 to 2013, holding the position of President in 2005 and 2006. After a brief hiatus, he returned to the Board in 2023. Gordie also served on the PGA of Canada National Board on two occasions and was a key member of the Hall of Fame Committee from 2016 to 2022. His leadership as Co-Chair of the CMAC National Conference in Halifax in both 2009 and 2018 is further testament to his dedication.

Legacy

Gordie Smith’s induction into the PGA of Canada Atlantic Hall of Fame is a fitting recognition of his remarkable achievements and tireless efforts to grow and promote the game of golf.
