Bourgeois Punches Ticket

Bourgeois Punches Ticket

Marc Bourgeois, Louis Melanson Golf Academy, captured the TaylorMade Adidas PGA Atlantic Players Championship with a solid final round 4 under par 68 at the Sussex Golf &CC.

Sussex proved to be a fantastic venue as the course was in great condition and PGA Professional/General Manager Frank McShane and Assistant Professional Travis Parrell along with the Sussex membership were very hospitable hosts.

Bourgeois fired a 71 on day one to share the lead with Josh Landine of Kingswood and Brett Wilson of Fredericton, the 2015 Champion, who grew up on the Sussex layout. Another two shots back were defending champion Jamie Moran of Bally Haly, Adam Chamberlain of Gowan Brae, the 2016 Zone Champion and 2013 National Champion, and another hometown standout Justin Shanks also now out of Fredericton.

Day two saw things stay tight through 27 holes as Bourgeois shot 34 to lead at 3 under par. Wilson shot 35 to sit at 2 under and Chamberlain blistered the front nine in 33 to also sit at minus two. Brian Affleck, the 2014 Champion, made a move with a 34 to stay three back tied with Landine who shot 37. Moran was still hanging around four back at one over.

Chamberlain slipped with three straight bogeys to start the back nine. Bourgeois started to pull away as he birdied ten and parred holes eleven and twelve. Wilson stayed within two shots as he parred all three however bogeys on holes thirteen and fourteen coupled with a par and birdie by Bourgeois left Wilson out of the picture at even par with Bourgeois now at minus five. Landine dropped a couple of shots by the midpoint of the last nine to slip to plus two. Moran just couldn’t make anything happen so slowly faded.

Through fourteen, Bourgeois had a 5 shot lead shot lead over Wilson however Affleck managed to climb to within four as he opened the back nine with two birdies and a bogey through fourteen holes.

With four holes to play it looked like Bourgeois would easily cruise to victory. That all changed dramatically on the fifteenth hole as he made a double bogey to sit at minus three.

Bourgeois was unable to birdie the short par four sixteenth so was faced with the final two very demanding holes with only a two shot cushion.

Affleck finished his round with a birdie on seventeen and but his bogey at eighteen to finish his round now appeared to be very costly. He finished with a 69 and a one under par total of 143 but all he could do was wait as Bourgeois played the final two holes.

As a true champion would, Bourgeois completed his round in spectacular fashion as he birdied both of the difficult finishing holes to win by four over Affleck.

Chamberlain righted the ship to secure 3rd with matching 73s at 146. Neal Ryan, current Zone Champion, also shot 73 and a 147 total to tie for 4th with Moran and Wilson.

Brian Affleck (2nd); Tim McCullum (TMaG); Champion Marc Bourgeois; Adam Chamberlain (PGA Atlantic Director, 3rd); Frank McShane(Host PGA Professional)

TaylorMade Adidas Golf have been tremendous partners and supporters of the PGA of Canada Atlantic. Bourgeois’ victory secured him a spot in next year’s PGA Championship of Canada presented by TMaG. The PGA of Canada Atlantic professionals will be well represented.

Congratulations Marc!
